Browsing 3D artefacts of the Victoria and Albert Museum

Fraunhofer IGD presents a new 3D-COFORM demonstrator that brings 3D Cultural Heritage online for everybody using the x3dom technology.

x3dom is an open source framework that integrates HTML5 and declarative 3D content. It allows to embed X3D elements in modern HTML5 based websites. Recent versions of internet browsers support 3D graphics hardware acceleration via WebGL natively, without relying on third party plugins. The x3dom framework supports known HTML interaction standards and event models on 3D objects (such as “onclick”). Thus, 3D websites offer the same user experience as todays 2D websites, with an additional dimension for designers' ideas and visions.

The benefit of this technology for digital Cultural Heritage is obvious. People from all over the world will be able to access databases providing vivid 3D representations of cultural artefacts. The technological barrier is at a minimum since x3dom relies on open software standards. /16. January 2011
